How to Choose the Best Interior Paint

Believe it or not, there’s more to interior paint than simply choosing a colour. There are several different kinds of paint finishes, variations of paint materials, and differing levels of fumes from the paint– and that’s just the beginning of what you should take into consideration when it comes to choosing the perfect interior paint. Here are a few things about paint that you should explore when making your decision:

  • Paint finishes: The five most common kinds of paint finishes are eggshell, satin, matte, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. If you want a smooth or flat look for your walls, your best bets would be matte or eggshell. Eggshell has just a little more gloss than matte does. Satin is a good in-between choice for both gloss and flatness. Semi-gloss and high-gloss continue to climb that scale of sheen, with high-gloss being the most reflective, of course.

  • Level of fumes: It doesn’t take long to get a headache from many kinds of paint. The chemicals in paint can give off an odour that can be annoying and overwhelming, but luckily, there are paints that emit hardly any fumes. Low-odour paints are referred to as low-VOC and no-VOC. Some low- and no-VOC paints include Benjamin Moore Aura and Fresh Start Premium Primers.
  • Application difficulty: Some paints are easier to apply than others. Be sure to look into how many coats it will take, if primer is necessary, and how long the paint will take to dry.
